Job Description
New Marine Precinct
Temperate marine fish and invertebrate husbandry
Experience with marine Life Support Systems

Melbourne Zoo is undergoing a major redevelopment and transition into a Zoo-based Conservation Organisation. With a new marine precinct currently underway, we have an opportunity for an experienced Aquarist to join this exciting new department.

This is a key position for the development of our new marine facility with the target of providing best practice animal care for marine organisms. This position will be initially focused on developing/trouble shooting the Life Support System, developing staff training in water quality management and setting up the aquarium displays. It will also involve acquiring and quarantining new fish stock, daily husbandry of all fish and marine invertebrates, chemical and biological water testing, SCUBA and free diving, fish and invertebrate propagation.

You are a highly motivated, energetic and cooperative team member, with strong verbal and written communication skills. Well-developed interpersonal and presentation skills, demonstrated experience in imparting messages and the ability to engage the general public is essential. Experience in the husbandry of different taxa encompassing a broad range of marine and fresh water fish and invertebrates is also essential. Qualification in water quality management is preferred, SCUBA certification (minimally at an Open Water level) required.

As part of the Melbourne Zoo’s Life Sciences Team, you will be required to work a roster across a 7-day week, including weekends and public holidays, be physically able to undertake work and hold a current driver’s license.
