Chester Zoo - Keeper - Herpetology

Chester Zoo is one of the leading zoological collections in Europe with an international reputation for achieving its mission in conservation, research and education. 

We currently have a vacancy for a Herpetology Keeper to join a busy and diverse section committed to advancing all aspects of zoo-based herpetological practice.

The successful candidate will have a degree in biological sciences or equivalent. They will have good theoretical knowledge of herpetology, and a broad knowledge of amphibians and reptile husbandry, diet and reproduction and proven experience working in a zoo or aquarium herpetology collection. They will have outstanding observation skills, attention to detail and proven track record of delivering high standards of husbandry and exhibitry. The successful candidate will be computer literate and conversant in the use of standard software packages. They will have the ability to prioritise a diverse workload, and have good communication and customer care skills. The successful candidate will be committed to ensuring the highest possible standards of animal welfare and husbandry. They will have an understanding of the role of zoo’s in research and conservation.

The successful candidate will ideally have an advanced certificate in Management of Zoo Animals. They will desirably have experience and interest in, the care and exhibition of invertebrates and expertise in the care of tropical plants. The successful candidate will ideally be skilled in natural and artificial theming of exhibits. They will ideally have familiarity with all aspects of managing venomous snakes. The Successful candidate will desirably be competent in ARKS software.

Salary is £14,171 to £15,745 (subject to Job Evaluation) after satisfactory completion of the 6 month probationary period.
