Chester Zoo is one of the leading zoological institutions in Europe with an international reputation for achieving its mission in conservation breeding programmes, research and education.

With the new ‘Islands’ site under construction, due to open in the spring, 2015 is set to be an exciting year!  This unique and innovative project will provide an immersive experience; showcasing the animals of South-east Asia and working towards a better understanding of the vital conservation work being undertaken in this region.

We currently have a vacancy for a permanent Keeper to join a large and busy Lower Vertebrate and Invertebrate team (starting 1st March 2015). For the right candidate, this post offers a fantastic opportunity to work with a wide variety of species ranging from Reptiles, Amphibians, Fish to Invertebrates.  The position will also be required to work in the zoo’s public displays, quarantine and supporting off show breeding areas.

Chester Zoo aims to set a benchmark for animal welfare and the successful candidate must be able to deliver an excellent level of animal husbandry, care and welfare for the assigned taxa; ensuring that all enclosures and facilities are maintained to the highest possible standards.

We are looking for someone with proven experience. Candidates must have experience of working with captive herpetological, ichthyological and/or entomological colonies, in a zoological setting. Particular experience of exhibit design and their regular maintenance and working in quarantine conditions are desirable.  Candidates will be expected to be qualified to HND/BSc level in a zoological related science or equivalent experience and be computer literate with experience of ARKS/ZIMS. Experience of working within strict Safe Working Practices is also essential for this position.

The successful candidate will have experience of working as a member of a team, with good oral and written communication skills. A full UK driving licence would be desirable.

Salary is £17,367.09 per annum for a 40 hour week.
