Experienced Animal Keeper

Experienced Animal Keeper

EXPERIENCED ANIMAL KEEPER – SHALDON WILDLIFE TRUST, DEVON

Shaldon Wildlife Trust is a small zoo on the Devon coast, set in an acre of woodland.  We are the smallest member of BIAZA and EAZA. Despite this, we are active members of the zoo community and support conservation projects all over the word. Over the years we have gained a great deal of expertise in the breeding of many species, particularly small primates, and are regarded highly in this field.

We are going through an exciting period of change as the zoo develops and so are looking for a dynamic, knowledgeable individual to become a key member of our team. This role will provide the right candidate with the opportunity to develop and grow in a small team.

We currently have a vacancy for an experienced animal Keeper.  This is a key role which will involve working on section, covering all areas of animal husbandry including feeding, cleaning, training and record keeping; as well as interacting with the zoo visitors with regular keeper talks and delivering our popular encounters and experiences.  The role of animal Keeper will also include coaching our volunteers and work experience placements so interpersonal skills and the ability to motivate others will be essential. We are seeking an enthusiastic, high performing individual with an interest in zoo animal management, education and conservation. You must be a good team worker with a positive outlook and have excellent communication skills and be able to organise and prioritise tasks. A good understanding of risk assessments is required to ensure all members of staff are fully aware of safety and management procedures.
A minimum of 2 years zoo keeping experience, and an animal-related qualification, such as DZMAA would be advantageous.

 - The role is full time. Salary is paid monthly.  We provide uniform and 28 days holiday per annum.
- Applicants should have a full driving licence and be prepared to work weekends and Bank Holidays in a roster system.
